Connecticut is the southern gateway to New England and is the northwestern part of the Nutmeg State – the Litchfield Hills – is rich with rolling landscapes, villages centered upon town greens, hiking and bicycling trails, and tons of antique shops.
Hartford, in the central Valley, and its outlying cities offer many historic buildings such as the Old State House, Mark Twain's home, and the New England Air Museum in Windsor Locks. Some enjoy watching NASCAR races on the Stafford Motor Speedway or driving along U.S. 91 and seeing the region’s old tobacco barns and fields.
Connecticut's coastal Fairfield region is home to a range of outdoor and youthful fun: the Beardsley Zoo which is a favorite for kids; the Maritime Aquarium; the Barnum Museum. New Haven is the home of Yale University, with its magnificent architecture and world-class art museums; the Hammonasset Beach State Park and the Thimble Islands. Moving toward Mystic, on the eastern shore is the world-renowned Mohegan Sun Casino and the Foxwoods Resort and Casino. Be sure to dine at the vast selection of fine restaurants at the casinos.
If you go to Mystic be sure to visit the Aquarium and the Mystic Seaport, a living history museum depicting coastal New England in the 19th century. Not far away is the city of New London, home port of the United States Coast Guard Academy. New London’s Ocean Beach Park is an old-fashioned family beach with plenty of amusements for children. Hours of shopping can be found in the Tanger Outlet Center in Westbrook, the Clinton Crossing outlets in Clinton, and at Olde Mistick Village in Mystic. And towards the northeastern corner are the villages of Pomfret, Woodstock, and Lebanon which have enough antique shops to keep an antique lover on the move for many days. |
